There's more than one way to find cooperation. Survival's necessary, I won't argue with that. But we need protection, too. I don't know what else is out there, I don't even know how many of us can survive like this either.

[Bruce begins to disassemble a gun carefully, intently.] But we're not very good if we're trying to survive in fear. We need clear heads to get through the desert and whatever comes our way. What I need is for all of us to work together not just out of necessity.

[Of course they need to learn the environment. But what good will learning do if they're all panicking and afraid? Even in survival Bruce has to consider the complexities of the unknown, how it could gnaw at a mind and wreck any resolve.]

We can provide protection and survival with both tools and knowledge. I wouldn't have one without the other.
