Intro Log: The Forgotten City

GOOD MORNING NEW ARRIVALS

This time for real!

WAKEY WAKEY.

As the storm finally peters out and characters can once again move above ground it becomes abundantly clear that the landscape has changed. Where vast expanses of sand dunes once laid is now the half-buried remnants of what looks like some sort of...city? Full of structures. It stretches so far it's really hard to tell. But there is one thing characters will notice:

There are more stasis pods.

Revealed by the sandstorm, a whole new flurry of pods can be found scattered on the way to the city (curiously though, not in it. Hurry and wake those guys up!

SPREAD THE LOVE. OR ACID.

With the departure of the storm there's even more new arrivals to be found besides those fellow travelers of yours! The "Seedlings" and "Cactus" are now both available, the former blown in by the storm and the former uncovered.

The Seedlings are generally pretty harmless. They like to burrow into the sand so only their "Leaves" plant-like leaves remain above ground, and they're quite happy to stay that way until surprised. Then they pop up and trip over themselves a little, before slowing down and wandering aimlessly. When they find a patch of sand that looks comfy they begin burrowing back down.

Pull or yank on their leaves though and you'll find yourself with a face full of pollen that makes you want to just tell everyone how super-cool they are. It lasts a while, and then you get a fever and vomit for two hours. Good times.

The Cacti are much less harmless and just...why would you eat them? Everything about this plant is poisonous, and cracking it open causes a corrosive acid-like substance to spill out. It'll eat through everything but...dirt, oddly. Metals and flesh are like hot oil on plastic.

DON'T GET LOST

And last but not least: The Forgotten City. Maybe you want to check out the Hull first for some loot, but maybe that's not such a cool idea anymore? Although it looks like the ship's definitely more powered after draining the suits of whoever went in, now it's started to spread and fill the sinkhole the ship's in. Suits can go from 100% to 0% in just ten minutes--not good!

Lucky for everyone else, it looks like finally there's some sort of civilization up ahead. Go on and check it out!

OR DO. THAT'S OKAY TOO.

Go nuts, have fun, and enjoy! (This is the wildcard option)

OOC

The Flora, Fauna & Resources page has been updated with information on the seedlings, cacti, and crystals! These items are now all available for Discovery, and The Forgotten City will be available indefinitely from now on! Characters can take this time to settle & build up a foundation for themselves, explore the area, and of course, harass those poor little seedlings.

We encourage players to make their own open posts for this setting--you don't need to stick to just this intro log! But make sure to make our newbies feel welcome!

Lance - OTA

[personal profile] ceruleo 2016-11-09 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[[ooc. If you want to plot with me, hit me up here or on plurk @ lunation. You can always drop an empty comment and I'll make you a custom starter, no problem!

NOTE: LANCE HAS LIMITED MAP DATA HE CAN TRANSFER TO YOUR CHARACTER. hmu if you want it. ]]

1. PRE-STORM: BACKDATED TO DAY 11, OTA - ONLY 1
[ The Trilobite Queen has sprouted plants, and as apparently investigating the properties of alien flora is now old hat to Lance, he has a pile of small red 'berries' in front of him, plus one bulbous flower full of sap, and is holding out a pear-like fruit to whoever passes by. ]

Need a boost? It's like espresso fruit or something.

[ Is his hand shaking? Maybe. (The fruit is totally safe, though.) ]

2. STORM: BACKDATED TO DAY 11, OTA - ONLY 1
[ The wind howls overhead, making the Hull's metal structure moan. Wary of the power drain, Lance hasn't gone inside, but he has taken refuge in the sinkhole, using the Queen's corpse as shelter. The smell isn't anything to write home about, but it doesn't have that telltale odour of rot, which is nice.

Lance has got himself a rifle, though it's currently nonfunctional, jammed from sand and rust. He has it laid out and gutted in front of him, laying out the pieces on a makeshift table made out of scrap hauled out of the Hull. He counts out the pieces, wiping them on the suit meticulously. It's only when he's done the tedious task of cleaning that it dawns on him: aside from the larger pieces, he isn't sure how they all slot together. ]

Man, my bayard was so much easier than this. Do you know how this goes?

2. PODS: CLOSED TO PIDGE, HUNK + ALLURA
Allura, I think the storm stopped...whoa! You gotta see this!

[ He isn't sure what he was expecting to see when he first pops his head over the newly-created dunes, but more pods isn't it. He doesn't wait to see if the princess is following, just hoisting himself up, kicking up sand in his wake. He trails through them, feeling like he's in some kind of exposed graveyard, wary of touching, not wanting to open one of the ones that didn't...quite make it, like last time. When he sees a familiar face dozing behind frosted glass though, his blood turns to ice. ]

H-Hunk?! Hunk! [ He slams his hand down on the lid, making the entire receptacle hiss. Startled, Lance hops back, just in time to take in Hunk's smaller neighbour, the familiar curve of an upturned nose. The noise he makes catches in his throat, but then he's over there too, banging on the door, his whole body thrumming. ]

Please be awake, please be awake...

3. POLLEN: OTA
[ Lance is really, really happy to see you. Personal space? That shit's for losers. Lance is getting all up in your business, whatever that business may have been before he showed up. ]

Have I told you lately...how amazing you are?

[ He looks gone. ]

4. CITY EXPLORATION: CLOSED TO HUNK, PIDGE, CLARK
[ The archways of the city loom large before them, the wind whistling a haunting tune as it dances through. Even though he has a rifle now, Lance still somehow feels anxious, but all he has to do is remind himself that Pidge and Hunk are at his back again and it's basically like having an army. He steps more confidently than before. ]

Man. [ It's creepy, but admittedly impressive. ] How long do you guys think this city's been abandoned...?

2. Pods

[personal profile] sweatysometimes 2016-11-09 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ Pidge's eyes crack open as something rattles. She'd been in the wormhole. Twisting, falling... It takes a moment for her to focus, then everything is brought into stark wakefulness as she tries to take a breath--finds she can't. She gasps, sitting upright as her pod hisses open, venting the last chill of the pod into the warm desert air. She flails, one hand inadvertently smacking into Lance as she pulls herself upwards to try and breathe again.

Finally, sweet, sweet oxygen comes rushing into her lungs and she slumps down, breathing heavily as she tries to get herself oriented, eyes squinting against brilliant sun. A hand comes up--this isn't her Paladin armor she's wearing--to shield her eyes and finally, she seems to recognize Lance. ]

...Lance? Is that you?

an exotic trip to the desert
[The sun blinds Bruce, in a manner he can't quite remember. It's what happens when a man lives in the dark for so long.

Or maybe the sun really is just that bright.

Desert storms often change a landscape. The dunes shift, the tracks disappear. But for an entire city to become unearthed? That almost sounds like a fairy tale, or something a young master Bruce would have imagined.

His screwed-up gaze finally stops upon the sight of more stasis pods. Had they been buried underneath? Or were they dropped onto the surface after the storm stopped? Questions upon questions, and still no answers. This is a long game.

Either way, he's heading out towards them, hoping there are more survivors than casualties. Hopefully he'll find a friend or two willing to help those in the pods, or at least scavenge the empty pods. Something nags at him though, likely his paranoia, that there may yet be more dangers out there.

Along the way, he squats to observe the crystals. They look familiar, but he knows not to trust his own perception. If only he had better tools to dig them out...

When he's not out trying to save people, he's exploring the city, finding pathways that double back constantly. You might catch him marking off walls or pausing to remember his steps.]

luxury gym memberships
[Seeing as that staying in the ship does more harm than good, Bruce as come to a few conclusions.

1. They can't continue to stay in there, nor in the nearby area.
2. There are too many new people to be unarmed.
3. He needs more time to investigate the things he found, without the possibility of the suit discharging.

Bruce Wayne now has a plan, a mission, for the moment.

Slung onto his back is an enormous bag of guns and ammo, all salvaged from the abandoned ship. Clearly there's been some care in arranging them in a manner that, he thinks, won't suddenly go off. He certainly can't pretend to understand the weapons in their fullest capacity, but he's a clever man, smart enough to figure out a few safety precautions.

He drops the bag off at the edge of the city, hiding it as best as he can, before going back to the ship to continue his mission

And on his way back?

Well.

He's dragging an enormous safe and its terminal through the desert with nothing but a few thick chains wrapped around it. He has to stop occasionally, though. The work isn't so much tiring as it is tedious. The work drains his suit because of the proximity to the ship, too. Whatever the ship has is enough to negate the suits. Given that he found a familiar symbol in the ship?

Bruce could only suspect it was a safety precaution, or a ship for too-dangerous inmates, a floating Belle Reve dealing with the worst of the worst in the galaxy.

The man takes his time, waits until his suit returns to an acceptable power level, and continues dragging the damn thing across the desert. The safe leaves behind a deep, obvious trail leading directly towards the newly unearthed city. Call it a one-way ticket to a better place.]

everyone gets a gun!
[Upon arrival, Bruce sets up shop dead center. He sits on the safe, casual as ever, yet dangerously alert. His eyes frantically scan the horizon when he's not too busy trying to fix the guns, or inspect the level of damage.]

Hope you haven't worn yourself out too much. You get by okay?

[If you ask him nicely, maybe he'll offer you a gun.]

Pidge Gunderson | Voltron: Legendary Defender | Open!

[personal profile] sweatysometimes 2016-11-09 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
[ A. Wakey, wakey! ]

Pidge, having awoken from her pod, is stumbling amongst the dunes trying to scavenge what she can from ruined pods and other debris. She's doing her best just to focus on putting one foot in front of the other and not think about how generally awful this situation is. No Lion. Stranded. At least some of her friends are here, right? She pauses to check another pod, shakes her head. This stuff is impossible to scavenge, really, without any proper tools. With an annoyed yell, she finally just kicks one--something she immediately regrets as pain shoots up her foot and she dances around clutching her toe before falling into the sand with a puff of dust. Oops.

"Stupid piece of junk--!"

[B. Spread the love ]

Pidge isn't one to go poking weird plants, herself. She'll leave that up to other people. Still, she's bound to be the subject of a pollinated hug or two as she makes her away across the sand towards the strange city that's emerged from amongst the dunes. Her reaction is almost universally annoyed or exasperated as she tries to avoid affection and get on with her hike.

[ C. Exploring the city ]

Pidge is picking her way among ruined buildings and sand swept streets, listening occasionally as the wind moans through the ruins. She doesn't like this place. It's empty and ruined and the strange markings on the buildings give her the heebie jeebies, but she needs to do something with herself. She pauses, lifting a hand to touch along the impressive claw marks.

"What the heck did this?" She murmurs the question aloud, though it's more meant for herself than anyone else.

[ Hunk's awakening is with no more grace than his partner's, his pod opening with the same hiss in response to Lance's love tap. Disoriented and sucking in deep breaths he tumbles face first into the dune, outstretched hands failing to catch him in time.

He raises his head to spit out a mouthful of hot sand, blinking up at the people around him - ]

[ No one seems to react to the opening of the pods gracefully, and Allura isn't that much more graceful as she rushes over, lured in by Lance's voice. ]

Hunk? Pidge? [ They're real, this isn't just an illusion caused by the sand and the storm, and alive.

After that last fight and the wormhole malfunction, getting to see more of the paladins alive is more than she expected, and like her greeting with Lance, she wraps her arms around Hunk and Pidge. ]

[ooc: if you'd rather action tags, just use those and I'll switch!]

Wakey wakey - A.

The realisation that he can't breathe comes only a second or two before he already is breathing again, blinded by sunlight coming from the completely wrong angle than it should be. It's also way too hot. The light suddenly cuts off and Cloud squints against the shadow above him, vague panic of being unable to breathe settling into newly-woken confusion.

"Wh--- Zack?"

Give him a second and he'll realise he's not where he's supposed to be. And that you are most definitely not Zack, whoever that might be.

Wakey wakey - B. (closed to Zack)

Rations from his own pod gathered, Cloud's going from pod to pod (knows he should stop for any unopened ones, but he'll go back later, if any are still unopened by then) with single-minded determination. He's not sure if he should be hoping to find Zack, or maybe Sephiroth, since at least he'd be out of the basement then, or even his mom. Or if he should hope no one else is here, but if no one else is, what's he... supposed to do then?

Unwillingly, his gaze is drawn to the sky above, something that should look familiar and now very much doesn't. Shaking his head, he focuses on the next pod just a few steps away, trying to ignore his worries and the unsettled twisting of his stomach.

Should he, or should he not hope... there's only a few pods that he hasn't checked left. Brushing away sand, Cloud just... freezes for a moment. And is then fumbling with what controls there are, wishing he hadn't run off to check the pods before asking how to open them---

It's pure chance he somehow does the right thing and the pod finally opens, Cloud jumping back, a little startled, then he's leaning in, heartbeat thundering in his ears.

"Zack?" He's okay, right? He has to be. Anything else would be worse than Zack not being here at all.

Spread the love, or acid (but there's no pollen involved here. Yet, anyway)

Watching a disturbed 'plant' wandering around with a mix of unsurprised curiosity and wariness on his face, Cloud frowns as it buries back under the sand a few meters away. It looks harmless enough, and even... kind of cute, he supposes, but tonberries look kind of cute too, and they aren't all that harmless.

Trying not to wilt in the heat, Cloud turns towards a large, bulbous cactus and eyes it, still dubious. Looking around, reflexively checking where Zack is before he turns to see if there's anyone else around to ask if they might know if it - any of these two things, really - are harmless or not.

Exploring the city

Peering down a rubble-strewn alley near the edge of the city, it's late enough by now Cloud's definitely tired. Well, he's been tired for hours, and the heat doesn't help, but he's used to ignoring that and simply working through it. You don't get through so much as basic if you couldn't manage that much, after all.

The claw marks decorating the tops of the ruined walls makes him think of Nibel dragons, but... those look (much) larger than what a Nibel dragon would leave behind. So what could've made those..?

"Try not to break anything. I'm not sure how well it would heal, with everything else going on."

Elma had clearly been here a while -- there was probably no other explanation for the fact that she had chitinous plates attached to her suit with wire, like armor. At least that might be hope that some salvage WAS possible.

The woman offered one hand to Pidge to help her up. "It may not be safe to stay around these pods. I'd suggest we leave immediately."

"Sorry. I'm afraid not."

Elma stepped back half a pace -- far enough to give the man some room to get out, close enough that if he began to topple over she could step forward and catch him. This routine was familiar by now.

"My name is Elma."

Being fully aware that he's fighting to breathe would have been liberating perhaps, given that wasn't the first thing to come back fully aware to in a while. No sedative slightly clouding him, no light glaring down, and not even a cold table underneath him. In fact, he feels like he's in a pressure cooker and his first instinct's out, out out.

And as if the world suddenly decided to be kind to him, there's a wheeze as the door of the pod opens about the same time the life support systems kick in and he gasps, blinking at the burning brightness of the sky and he might have been more focused on that feeling that he'd been suffocating. Except there's a shadow lingering over his and first instinct's to grab whoever was stupid enough to let him out of the tube without sedating him beforehand.

Only after the fact does Zack actually register the voice through the heated panic and utters out in complete shock, "...Cloud?"

My trip wasn't nearly so strenuous.

[ what padmé carries on her is small: rations of food and water; a handful of medical supplies; a small toolbox holding a meagre miscellany; a rifle without charge. nothing nearly comparable to a heavy safe carving a path through the sands, though such a feat long ago ceased to have strong impact. a galaxy far, far away is ridiculous.

her eyes run over the guns she can see, the sorry state of many. with a little care, she figures, many can be returned to working order. they won't have the sleekest looking weapons, but if she must carry one, she favors functionality.

"... Cloud, but---" Wary confusion trailed away. This didn't make sense. This wasn't Nibelheim, and he didn't recognise the woman at all... Pausing in the middle of scrambling out of whatever it was he'd been in, Cloud stared at the message displayed on his wrist, confused. Confused and starting to feel more than a little unsettled. Where was Zack (and his mom, Tifa, Sephiroth), anyway?

Taking in a shuddering breath of too-hot air, he glanced around - a desert, how had that even happened? - then back to Elma and then jumped out of the pod, swaying a little on the landing.

"What's going on? What---" He'd intended to ask what 'The Atlas' was, wondering if he should trust her at all, but he'd glanced up at the sky and froze. "... there's... two moons?"

Why was there two moons?

The hands snapping up and closing around his shoulders startles a noise out of him, and the conflicting instincts of duck away and stay still clash before he stops himself from moving. Not like it matters because trying to squirm out of the grip - on this side of painful before Zack gasps out his name and it lightens a little - would be plain impossible.

Relief makes him slump a little and he nods.

"Yeah. I thought..." shaking his head, Cloud pulls himself together. Saying I thought I was alone here wouldn't change anything, and while maybe it'd be better if Zack wasn't here, Cloud... can't help being relieved, still. Hesitating for a brief moment, he reaches out to brush covered fingers over Zack's elbow. "... you okay?"

As soon as the question is out of him, Cloud grimaces. Of course Zack's not okay. Why would he be? Just waking up was unpleasant enough...

Rather than answer that question, Zack's attention runs from Cloud's face, fuller in color and while afraid, he looks hopeful, too. Hopeful instead of strung out and terrified and half-there being taken away to who knows what compliments of their captor. And that alone's enough of a relief for Zack to use the hands he has on his friend's shoulders to pull him in maybe all to suddenly, wrapping him up in a hug. "You're asking if I'm okay? That's what I should be asking you!"

He pulls back, really looking him over. Noting the odd wet suit he's wearing. That's... definitely not something he's seen before never mind he can't imagine Hojo would fashion him up in something like that for that matter. Zack furrows his brows at the thought. "Seriously, you feeling alright?"

[ Waking up in such a strange place should feel like something new, but it isn't. Not really. Not when he'd already woken up in the manor to some... less than appreciated sentiments that led to everything he'd rather not talk about. At least this time, it hadn't been Hojo looking at him all too pleased under the knife. No, of all people, it'd been Cloud to help him out of the pod as he'd tried to settle into the fact that he was absolutely no where he thought he'd be.

He's still deciding if that's for better or worse.

But for right now? Right now, he's focusing on the grumbling from his belly while him and Cloud go nose around a bit off from each other. Usually... Usually, Zack's a lot more cautious, really. Survival tactics 101's part of operative training, after all. But in such an oddball space with hunger eating away at him, he... might be creeping up on the wrong kind of thing to mess with.

And he might be having regrets right now because as soon as he tries to pluck some leaves from a plant to sniff, a whole critter comes jumping out with. And the next thing he knows, he's backpedaling while coughing up a storm, a hand trying to wave off the pollen and failing miserably.

"Huh---?" Confusion coming out in a startled huff as Zack pulls him in, the hug is over before he has much of a chance to react to it, left wide-eyed and blinking for a moment. Belatedly, there's a very faint blush that Cloud immediately shakes away; he has become rather familiar with Zack's hugs over the last week, after all...

And maybe it's not so odd Zack would react that way to a question if he's okay. After all, only one of them is a SOLDIER here, and it's not Cloud... and Zack cares. But he does too, so why wouldn't he ask?

"... Um." Grimacing softly, Cloud shrugs. He almost says 'of course', but he can't quite manage it. Not after a week of tense confusion and waiting and then waking up here and it's an alien planet. And he's not wearing his clothes. Neither is Zack, though, so apparently these suits just come with the pods.

"There's... only us here, Zack," he finally says, frowning. Then realises how silly that sounds, and maybe a little childish, because his mom is surely perfectly fine back home, and quickly adds; "I mean, from anyone who was in Nibelheim. There are other people here..."

WAKEY WAKEY;

[ It's a feeling Jim's regrettably familiar with, and definitely not a pleasant way to wake up. Stuck in a cramped space while struggling for air isn't particularly high on his list of fun things to do, and the panic's a little too quick to set in, lingering even when life support kicks in and he swallows a mouthful of air down his lungs, sharp and sudden enough that he ends up getting dizzy and having a coughing fit for the next few seconds, even as he pretty much stumbles out of his pod.

From that point onwards, things aren't as weird to him as he'd like them to be. The situation hits a little too close to home right now, actually, save for the fact that he's got no weapons on him, no combadge, no intercom— he's not even in his uniform right now.

Silver lining, though: no way any of his shirts can get ruined if they're not here with him.

He's not sure where to go from here, so he'll approach anyone at all he sees who looks even remotely friendly. Or even not friendly at all. He needs to know what situation he's somehow managed to land himself in, and asking seems to be the logical course of action. Oh my God Spock get out of his head. ]

Hey. [ He nods, trying not to look like the mess he feels. ] You got a minute?

SPREAD THE LOVE;

[ So here's the thing: when you poke at a plant and said plant hops from the ground and starts running around, you don't try to go after it. You certainly don't try to catch it like it's got some kind of answers for you, because it doesn't.

The only thing Jim gets from his spectacularly brilliant idea is a face full of pollen and about half a second to panic about what he's just gotten up his nostrils... then the next moment his focus seems to shift solely to finding someone, anyone at all just so he can tell them how awesome they are.

So this is what you're getting. James T. Kirk, intrepid Captain of the USS Enterprise. About to be right in your face in three, two, one... ]

DON'T GET LOST (OR DO...);

[ After his rather emotional displays, and after the whole thing literally being spewed out of his system, Jim feels a lot more like himself. Himself plus a dose of awkward, which, for the record, isn't a feeling he's used to. Luckily (or hopefully) their situation seems a little too dire to be focusing on his random displays of admiration at complete strangers, and he's eager to learn more about the place.

Actually he's eager to find water more than anything. To drink and to bathe in, because as days go by he starts to feel the sweat gathering sand in places where he definitely does not want it in.

With the abandoned city revealed to them, Jim can be found just about anywhere, evidently not the least bit worried about getting a little lost. Whatever, he'll find his way out. Hopefully after he stumbles onto some secret lake or fountain somewhere. ]

(( ooc: I'm open to threading out someone getting his pod open, as well as someone finding the lake with him, but for obvious reasons these options are only open to one person each! ))

The look and the shrug's nothing unusual and- well, expected considering. But he doesn't look traumatized to high hell. Zack's... not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe Cloud's just letting things set in. Maybe he doesn't want to talk about things. There could be a myriad of reasons and they would all be reasonable.

Except now he's talking almost as if anyone from Nibelheim had survived and Zack's eyes widen marginally at that. Briefly but there while that sinks in. Then, he's biting his lip with a distant look on his own face. No one form Nibelheim... but other people "here", but... His gaze finally wanders to the incredibly blue sky and the rolling dunes of overbearing desert around them that he can see now, sitting up like he is.

"Where's here...? Corel?" Or maybe Cosmo Canyon? But it looks like neither. And is that- another moon or something?
thephix: max (and I've never)

wakey wakey!

[On the surface, Max probably looks like she belongs in the mostly friendly camp, since she's calmly sitting in the shade of her pod, undertaking the important task of braiding her hair. (For all it could seem like vanity, she's just realized in this hot sun she doesn't want heavy hair on the back of her neck).

When Jim speaks, she looks up with an easy smile.]

I'm sure I could find a whole five minutes, for you.

[Playing friendly is her best bet until she learns more about this place and the people here.]

Not looking up until that thoughtful mumble, Cloud misses the widened eyes. But he makes up for it but staring incredulously at Zack, following his gaze up towards the sky and yes, Zack has clearly seen the second moon, now.

"There's two moons, Zack!" Maybe... that's a little sharper than warranted, and Cloud flushes. They don't need him cracking. He can handle this. He thinks he's been doing a pretty good job so far actually, aside from right when he woke up. But it's not so strange to be a little panicked when waking up in a situation like this, right?

"--- no, not Corel. I don't think... anyone knows where this is," he says, more softly this time. At least Elma hadn't. He hadn't... exactly stopped to talk to anyone else, looking for Zack, or... anyone he knew, really, among the pods.

"Shit, that is another moon!" Well, if Cloud's not going to be cracking, that's okay. Zack will do it for him. Sort of. He's at least gaping now at this new discovery because what. Just WHAT. His mind is blown. And probably not in the best of ways as he finally starts to try and scuttle out of the pod to see better, twitching in belated realization first when he feels the shift of something on him and looks down to see he's wearing the very same skin tight type of suit Cloud has on.

That's not disconcerting at all.

But he continues on up out of the pod and onto his feet- on his actual feet without feeling like he's going to stagger and fall down -before he's taking in his surroundings in a mix of astonishment and growing unease. "Where the hell...? This makes no sense!"

He's already looking back at the pod before the rest of him follows and he's scanning it over. It's old- so old looking like it's been there forever and that's already got his stomach doing back flips. But there's just the start. There doesn't appear to be the ShinRa logo anywhere.
